Nigel Barker...

On Thursday fashion photographer and America's Next Top Model judge Nigel Barker spoke about Richard Avedon at the Grand Rapids Art Museum and when I saw the assignment slip I immediatly requested it. This portrait is of Nigel and our Grand Rapids Press online winner. The podium shots of Nigel were limiting but I thought this was fun because he looks so sassy (and hot). I'm sorry but how can I resist a man who A.) Speaks in a brilliant British accent B.)Takes amazing photographs and C.)Saves baby seals.

I photographed this girl watching Barack Obama yesterday when he was at Calder Plaza. I've covered so many political rallys in the past few months I was okay being stuck outside the gates this time. His voice was booming across Ottawa Avenue as he spoke and I had fun photographing all the faces of people as they listend.

Coopersville High School students react after learning their friend and his family died in a house fire in Ottawa County.I don't post these pictures because they are graphic or fun in any way. I post them for discussion and as a demonstration of the power of capturing emotion.

Parking Day

The city of Grand Rapids did this weird parking day thing last week where local organizations were encouraged to rent out their own metered parking spots downtown and fill it with green things, (enviornmental, not the color). Some put out cute potted plants and others literally brought in sod and grilled burgers on their make-shift "lawns." I'm not sure how that was so green...my favorite was this little spot with a rainbow umbrella. The organization had their intern sitting out in it all day...oh how I can sympathize...

Every assignment that I shot today was food. We love food here at The Grand Rapids Press. These were taken at Bombay Cuisine, a yummy Indian food place in Eastown.
